Losing Tony

Like everyone else in my food-centric social media circle, I was shocked and extremely saddened this morning to hear of the death of one of my culinary heroes, Anthony Bourdain.

Of course I didn't know Tony personally, but I somehow feel his loss so profoundly. I mentioned to a friend that Tony was pivotal in my introduction to the food world. Food has always been a huge part of my life, but it wasn't until I began traveling and experiencing what was for me, mind-blowing cuisine, then wanting to come home and recreate it that Tony's culinary genius found me.

Breaking Up is Hard to Do ... but we can still be friends

I have read enough self-help books, Huffington Post articles, and (most recently) Facebook memes to know that good relationships can sometimes evolve into toxic relationships. When you find yourself in this kind of relationship, you make the smart decision and you end it. Then you console yourself that evening with a bottle of wine and forge ahead on the path of making new, healthy relationships.

Feeding Friends, and a Potential New Adventure

When I think about what makes me the happiest, hands down it's when someone is enjoying a meal I cooked for them. The best meals are admittedly enjoyed with friends and family, but I'll cook for anyone who is  brave enough to pull up a chair at the table ... or anyone who has no other options. Recently our company was honored to receive two guests from our Japan office, Kawabe Hirokazu and Shunji Tanaka. To make them more comfortable and to forgo meetings at the office or in loud restaurants, we decided to put them up in a lovely rental home on the "rim" (Page is located on a mesa) which overlooked Lake Powell. The house was, to put it bluntly, a stunner - and they spared no expense on the kitchen. So I piped up and offered to cook for our guest and the management team that would be meeting with them during their stay.

Road Trip Food Adventures - Hot and Hot Fish Club

The list of restaurants I long to visit has grown so exponentially large, that I've gone from calling it a traditional "bucket list" to a "dump-truck list". Neither sounds sexy and I'm not ashamed to admit I have a serious problem. It is a dump-truck list, folks, and I won't bore you with what region of the country is winning the race. I have amassed lists far and wide, but I was lucky enough recently to mark off a long-anticipated visit to Hot and Hot Fish Club, a vibrant restaurant in Birmingham focusing on farm to table in all ways possible, and on creating a memorable dining experience you won't soon forget.
